Pangmu Duwa Lahpai Zau Tu

Learn and Build Our Society Together!

Duwa Lahpai Zau Tu of Pangmu, was a man of great faith, courage and vision, a lover of his land and people. He provided much needed visionary leadership at a time when the Kachins were transitioning from old ways to the new at the cusp of the 19th Century.
He assumed the dual role of hereditary chief and pastor, but never let the functions interfere one with the other. As the Duwa of Pangmu, he preached and practiced strong work ethics, and impressed upon his people the need to adopt healthier lifestyles, more diversified farming, and sounder economic practices. Most of all, he stressed the need to look after, and build up the buga or homeland.
His fervor for an autonomous homeland directed him to lead a delegation of 56 Kachin chiefs and elders to Rangoon in December 1924- January 1925, to petition Governor Sir Harcourt Butler for Home Rule status, or failing that, to institute better education, health, agriculture and commercial opportunities for the Kachins.
Pangmu Duwa Zau Tu had a life-long passion for education, believing it to be the key to upward mobility for the Kachin people, and he fought hard all his life for Kachins to have access to higher education opportunities.
His vision of a university for the Kachins did not materialize during his lifetime, but his strong advocacy with the British District Commissioner at Bhamo, led to a government funded English high school at Sinlum, the first in Kachinland. Also, his agitation for a Kachin Bible School made it possible for Kachins to be theologically trained in their heart language.
KSAS aims to celebrate the centenary of 1924 Kachin Delegation with the establishment of the University of Kachinland. Students who shared the University Vision 2024 are strongly encouraged to apply for this award.
